5 Tips to Keep Your Social Life Alive While Stuck at Home

For the foreseeable future, our social life will continue to be put on hold. If you find yourself feeling lonely, frustrated and disconnected, here are five tips that may help. Social distancing shouldn’t keep you from staying connected with the people most important to you. So, get creative and follow these tips to keep your social life alive while you’re stuck at home.

#1 Virtually Work Out With Your Friends

Just because you’re stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t train with your friends and family members. Everyone knows working out with a buddy is way more fun. So, video dial your best friend and keep your workout plan on track. Training with friends will boost your motivation and self-esteem, and a bit of friendly competition certainly won’t hurt. In fact, it will push you along in your fitness journey.

If you need a bit of inspiration, challenge your workout buddy to this full-body challenge:

100 Jumping Jacks
40 Squats
30 Butterfly Sit-Ups
20 Push-Ups
10 Plank to Pike
10 Burpees

Please remember—quality form over time. Complete each movement through its full range of motion.

Before you start, grab a timer and see how fast you can complete the challenge. Did you beat your friend? Fitness challenges are a great way to stay motivated and push you to perform at a high level. We promise—this short challenge will keep your heart rate pumping. Give it a try!

#2 Virtually Cook With Your Friends

We’ve still got to eat, right? And maybe sneak in a glass of wine while we’re at it! It’s way more fun to cook with friends. Chatting over a delicious meal is one of the ways we keep bonds strong with our friends and relatives. Obviously, doing that in person is out of the question at the moment. However, if you’re willing to be creative, you can use video chatting to have virtual dinners with your friends and family. So, download Zoom and virtually invite your friends around your dining room table.

If you need a bit of dinner inspiration to impress your friends, check out 1000s of easy-to-make and delicious recipes in the Gymondo app. Even though your friends won’t be able to taste what you’re eating, they’ll be wowed by your beautiful meal.

#3 Virtually Hike With Your Friends

One of the best remedies for pent-up frustration is walking and talking. Scientists at the University of Essex recently found that the mood and sense of well-being of people is boosted significantly with as little as 5 minutes of outdoor exercise. With warm weather on the horizon, you may be missing out on the wonders of nature. Ask your friends to virtually join you as you get outside and lose yourself in nature. With a bit of fresh air, you’ll release some much-needed endorphins and boost your energy level. And even when your hike gets challenging, just knowing your friend is on the other end will be enough motivation to keep you going.

#4 Virtually Watch Stuff With Your Friends

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably binge-watched a lot of Netflix series over the past month. While watching movies and series alone helps you escape reality, movie night is much more fun with friends, even if it looks a bit different now. Sync stream and chill with your friends and family as you enjoy movies and series together. Reconvene after each show and analyze the episode. Maybe you picked up on something your friends didn’t catch or visa versa. It’s your time to shine as a movie critic!

#5 Virtually Read Books With Your Friends

Start an online book club. Every few weeks, introduce a new book and invite your friends to meet up over virtual wine and snacks to discuss. Here are some great book recommendations to pique your interest.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Explore the joy and peace we may discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world and start trusting the voice deep within us.

Life Will Be the Death of Me by Chelsea Handler

The funny, sad, super-honest, all-true story of Chelsea Handler’s year of self-discovery.

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

A sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), this novel is set 15 years in the future and follows three women as they try to survive in Gilead.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

A romantic drama set in the 1930s—a former veterinary student takes a job in a traveling circus and falls in love with the ringmaster’s wife. They discover beauty amidst the world of chaos and come together through their compassion for a special elephant.

The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! by Gloria Steinem

For decades—and especially now, in these times of crisis—people around the world have found guidance, humor and unity in Gloria Steinem’s gift for creating prose that inspires action and creates hope. This is a beautifully illustrated collection of Gloria Steinem’s most inspirational and outrageous quotes.

Each of these books is about powerful women who’ve overcome obstacles (in one way or another) and succeeded against adversity. Now is a pertinent time to get inspired by their stories.

Focus Inward

While working on your social skills is important, this is also a great time to take care of the relationship you have with yourself. Give yourself some space for solitary activities like reading, writing in your journal, assembling puzzles or meditating. Spend some quality time with yourself and do the things you enjoy most. This will enhance your mood and feed your soul with self-love. And once you tire of spending so much time alone, just pick up the phone and call a friend.
