Don’t let the Covid-19 crisis hold you back from supporting your LGBTTQIA+ community this month.
June is officially Pride month, a magical, fun and celebratory time, no matter how you identify. And while Pride might look a bit different this year, it’s the perfect time to remember loved ones, congratulate ourselves for how far we’ve come and remind ourselves of how much farther there is left to go.
It’s a time to experience connection and community. Here’s our list of the top 5 ways to celebrate Pride this month no matter where you are.
#1 Define What Pride Means to You
Pride is as much about appreciation and recognition as it is about celebration, so try to incorporate a little extra mindfulness into your Pride celebration this month. Explore what Pride means to you and reimagine how you want to celebrate your own personal journey, the journey of a loved one or the journey of the LGBTTQIA+ community.
Sit with yourself and define what Pride really means to you. If it means celebrating your own journey, then you should treat yourself. If it means supporting others, donate to a local LGBTTQIA+organization or cause.
#2 Support Your LGBTTQIA+ Community
Find a way to uplift and support the work of your LGBTTQIA+ community. Take part in activism to help achieve equality and inclusivity for all.
If you don’t feel educated enough, read more novels by LGBTTQIA+ authors to better understand how gay and queer identities have been experienced by others.
Even better, talk with members of your LGBTTQIA+ community to gain a first-hand perspective. The more we learn about others that are different from us, the more respect we’ll have for humankind, regardless of sexual orientation, gender or skin color.
#3 Become an Ally
When someone in your life comes out to you, it takes great courage. Learning that someone close to you is LGBTTQIA+ can open a range of emotions. While it may be hard to find the right words, recognize the importance of how you respond and the impact it may have. They are sharing intimate details of their life with you because you are someone they value and trust.
Coming out is a very personal experience, and the support needed will look different for each individual. There is no one right way to be a great ally, but here are some helpful tips:
- Learn, listen and educate yourself.
- Think of ‘ally’ as an action rather than a label.
- Confront your own prejudices and biases.
- Recognize that language matters.
#4 Practice Self-Care
While it’s hard to turn down a rainbow-filled, glittery Pride party, make sure to take plenty of time for yourself. Give yourself the space to love up on who you are and appreciate how far you’ve come. Self-care and reflection are the fertilizers for personal growth.
Loving yourself may mean working out, morning meditations, bubble baths, watching your favorite series, shopping online or cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. Whatever it is, shower yourself with self-care rituals the entire month.
#5 Reach out to Friends and Family Members
Call your friends, loved ones and chosen family. There’s never been a more important time in history to connect with others. Pride, in its truest form, is a celebration of love and solidarity for your LGBTTQIA+ community, so be sure to show your loved ones just how much you care. After all, community care is just as important as self-care.
